Train Service Performance
Network Rail issued performance results for Period 4. Release below. Arriva Trains Wales – P4 is 95.5%. While it is a decline of 0.3% on last year’s comparable P4 ATW is the second highest performing TOC in the UK for the period. ATW is also 3.3% above the national period average. ATW’s moving annual average (MMA) is 93.6 which is 2.9 per cent above the national average. The business is fifth highest performing TOC according to MAA. . For Cambrian Lines specifically these are as follows:
For the periods considered here, in the main, we have undoubtedly been compromised by significant issues associated with the infrastructure across the network, especially incidents involving cable theft and flooding in the early part of the year. Unfortunately, cable theft continues to pose a significant threat anywhere on our network but it is particularly frustrating when such incidents are repeated at the same location. We recognise the efforts of Network Rail to provide protection in this regard but we continue to apply realistic pressure on them to ensure that all reasonable controls are considered and implemented. We have also been challenged by other infrastructure failures, i.e. signalling systems, which has resulted in lengthy disruption. The Cambrian line has become the first railway in Britain to use the world's most advanced signalling system. The European Rail Traffic Management System went live on 28 March following extensive tests between Pwllheli and Harlech. The new system covers 133 miles of the Cambrian line from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli The project is designed to improve safety, an in-cab system intended to replace traditional line side signalling. In addition to extensive driver training, our fleet of Class 158 trains have been refitted to accommodate the new system and a new signalling control centre has been built at Machynlleth

National Passenger Survey
The Spring 2011 wave of NPS research was conducted between 31st January and 15th April 2011. This report summarises the performance of Arriva Trains Wales / Trenau Arriva Cymru (ATW) and has been produced to meet reporting requirements associated with schedule 8.4 and schedule 13 (part VII) 7.1 of the franchise agreement.
This report will comment on the following areas: · Overall Satisfaction · Comparison to the franchise benchmark · Factors showing a significant change in passenger satisfaction year on year
We are delighted that the Spring 2011 customer satisfaction score related to ATW's overall performance has now risen to +7% above the franchise benchmark. This score represents a -1% decline in results year on year. However the survey was conducted against a background of industrial action which is likely to have affected customer perception. ATW is confident, that with these issues behind us and with further improvements to both station facilities and the ATW fleet planned for 2011, that this high score can be improved in the future.

Fleet Issues
All 27 Class 175 trains have now been through a major mechanical overhaul process which is already showing significant improvements in the reliability availability of this fleet. At the same time, we have taken the opportunity to carry out minor interior refurbishment of the vehicles. All Class 153 trains have now been refurbished internally and seats modified to allow better views through the train windows. Engines are being upgraded top 320 bhp from 280 The major refurbishment of all of the Class 158 trains has commenced with four already completed and in traffic. Customer feedback has been extremely positive on the new-look interiors and external livery.
The rain water harvesting scheme at Canton Depot is now fully operational and we believe the 320,000 litre storage system to be one of the largest above ground installations in the UK. The scheme will be monitored throughout 2011 to evaluate if it is delivering the anticipated benefits in reducing reliance on mains water services. This scheme has been achieved by collecting rain water from the Canton Depot train maintenance roof, filtering it and UV sterilizing it for filling of train toilet cisterns.
